home alone

Julie and the kids went down to Altamont for a looong weekend, Weds through Sunday. I stayed here in Vermont. I'm shifting jobs after this weekend. I'm going from part-time personal handyman back to full time father. The kids had their last day of day care on Weds before leaving for NY. It was sad to see them leave there, not because they are coming home to stay with me, but because they've grown a lot in their eight months in Turtle Island, and formed some great relationships with their caregivers and the other kids.

At any rate, I stayed here to try to finish up some minor projects around the house, and to kind of recharge my batteries and get myself in the right frame of mind for my new position. I've gotten a lot of small chores done around here, and I've engaged myself in a few bigger ones. On Thurs I constructed Julie a Mother's day present, putting up a gutter over the sun porch, and feeding into her new rain barrel. We had a thunderstorm that evening, and it worked like a charm. The barrel was about 95% full of water the next morning, and I've already used it to water Julie's flowers and garden for her. Today i spent the day burying the cable conduit from the pole by the road to the house. I had to dig a trench about 18" deep, for a length of probably a couple hundred feet. I got about two thirds of the trench dug, with Jed's help covering it back up. All that work and it pretty much looks like I didn't do anything.

I've also gotten to take advantage of bachelorhood a little too. Jed and wne to see ALO and Bret Dennen at Higher Ground in Burlington. Great, great bands. The over 40 crowd reading the blog would particularly like Bret Dennen, who is a phenomenal singer/songwriter. Mike Gordon came out and played along on the encore. If you don't know who Mike Gordon is, you probably wouldn't find that very exciting anyway. I also got to hit the movie theater (Spiderman 3 was better than the critics say), eat food requiring a minimal amount of effort, and listen to R-rated music very loudly. But I miss my family, and look forward to their return tomorrow.
