May 12-18: Rain, rain, rain...

This was supposed to be one of our "on" weeks for working on the house, but unfortunately it's been raining (a bunch) every day for the last week here in Vermont. Since we're still working outside with power tools, and are gearing up to work on the roof, we took a hiatus.

The rain couldn't have come at a worse time for the project, and morale is low. The house has been inundated with moisture, and black mold is starting to grow rampantly on the underneath of the plywood subfloor on the first floor of the house (it's still exposed in the garage). Also iron stains are starting to leach from the nails in our pine tongue-and-groove floor down onto our rough-sawn joists and beams. The rain also ruined a dozen pieces of plywood that we had sitting around to sheathe the sun porch, and is generally puddling up everywhere and creating a nuisance.

While there's rain in the forecast for a few more days (!!), we're hoping to crank back up tomorrow and have the house protected by Memorial Day or so. Eric's been here taking care of some prep work for the last couple days. We need to frame the overhangs on the roof, put some collar ties in the rafters, and a few other odds-and-ends, and then we can get the plywood and tar paper over the whole thing. Once that's done, everything can dry out, and we'll have a nice dry place to work when it rains. Keep your fingers crossed.
